App is not persistent

I am running a Nexus 4.
When AirDroid is running, I see the "Service is running" notification pinned on my notification tray. However, if I open my running apps (with the multitask button) and swipe away my currently running apps, AirDroid also closes completely even from my notification tray and system tray icons.

I have other apps installed on my phone such as an antivirus app that continues to run even if I have no apps currently running in my multitask list. I'm sure I am not the only one who likes to close all running apps when not using my phone for a while to clear recent memory.

My question is, why does AirDroid close when I close it as a running app? Wouldn't it make sense for it to remain persistent to utilize features like lost phone support, or am I doing something wrong?
