Possible "data drain"?

I downloaded Airdroid about a week ago and so far I've been very pleased -- though I suspect it's really best suited for someone who's more of a "power user" than I am...I just wanted to monitor SMS messages and got Airdroid only because I wasn't impressed with how erratic Mighty Text was.
Anyway...what I'm wondering about is how much of a drain on my provider's data network Airdroid might be when I'm not on wi-fi. Frankly, that's not too often since when I'm home the phone and my computer are connected via Comcast wi-fi and when I'm at my local coffee shop hangout, there's wi-fi there, too. But during the weekends, when out of town, I'm frequently away from wi-fi...and I'm wondering if Airdroid is drawing from the Verizon network simply by virtue of being connected -- even if I'm not engaging via one of the functions. My data plan is currently more than sufficient...but I don't want to find out after the fact that Airdroid was causing a "data drain" simply by being connected but idle.

Thanks!
