in other words: full control of the android device's screen from remote. Typing, opening apps on it. etc. VNC it or w/e. I hoped with airdroid to be able to do that.

Sorry that managing icons and screens is not supported yet in AirDroid. We've collected your suggestion and will take it into consideration.
If your device has been rooted, you may try screenshot feature which lets you stream the Android screen in nearly real-time. More detailed guide: http://help.airdroid.com/customer/porta ... screenshot
