An easy way to fix the whole external sd card issue would be to let the user add their own folders to the left panel where "SD Card" and "System" are as an option on the right click menu, much as you can add your own folders to "Libraries" on Windows 7. That way it doesn't matter how the device handles external storage. Though of course, it would work for any folder not just external storage.
