I love Airdroid but the latest version is driving me mad with its intrusiveness. Can anyone tell me how it can be configured to just appear when I want it to and go away when I don't need it.

Sorry that you don't like the new version. 
Do you mean that you want to close the widget? You can right-click the widget and click Hide widget.
If you want to enable it again, right-click the system tray icon and click Show widget.
