File Transfer from Phone to PC

How can I copy files and folders from my phone's SD card onto my pc?
I can see the files on Airdroid and can even "copy"them. Windows does not see the same clipboard and the download function always wants to zip the files.is there a drag and drop function that I am missing somewhere? If the transfer is going directly though the WiFi network, why bother zipping?
ie, would like to find the file on the phone and "copy paste" / "drag and drop" the file to my D drive for example.
