I can send/receive SMS fine on my LG G3 using the Chrome add-in. I can receive SMS using the AirDroid app, but every time I've ever tried to reply to / send an SMS it says "failed to send".

Yes, I have exactly the same problem. I have a Samsung S3 Mini running android 4.1.2.
I also find I get continual notifications on my PC to upgrade the phone android to v3 - and it was done long ago.
And I find that when the airdroid notification mirror is turned on, I get every new screen announced. That's so annoying that I can't live with it.
In all v3 is not an upgrade for me. If I can't get v2 back, I will be ditching airdroid
