Trying to load messages/contacts/etc. just sits there

When I try and see contacts or messages, the loading indicator just sits there forever. Never loads. I can see other things about my phone, so I know it works. I do have a lot of contacts and messages, but I get an error after a while. It is a popup that has:
Alert
{yellow triangle exclamantion} !!

Ok button

It never finishes. Just sits there forever. Is there something I can do to get this loaded?
