Can't connect over Internet

I can connect locally to my phone using a browser and a local address but cant connect over the internet using desktop app. Both phone and desktop apps have internet connectivity and desktop app lets me log into Airdroid but when I click on SMS or call history I just get... "Failed to connect, please check network and try again."

Is there a port I need to open or something I am missing.

Desktop app? You mean web.airdroid.com or AirDroid Win/Mac? Can you attach a screenshot? Thanks.
