If you can get the contacts as *.csv there are ways (online or download Prog) to then get them to VCard or if you have them from outlook you can get them to VCard even if you have to copy the whole lot & forward them to yourself as an attachment that you then save (In Outlook 2003)
If you have a folder with all the VCard files in on your desktop then AirDroid allows you to upload then (50 at a time) into the internal storage of the connected phone (in my case an LG L20)
Going to the contacts app then allows you to import the previously uploaded VCard files and same them in the phone. With the transfer limit it does get a bit tedious and you stand a chance of having the same contact appear more than once
I know this works because I spent large part of last night doing just this with a couple of hundred
