Access from outside the LAN

Why: sometimes the Android and Desktop/Laptop are not in the same LAN.

That's doable via dynamic DNS over the router from android's LAN. That's how I did it. I'm pretty sure that there's also an android app for dynamic DNS.

dustfeather can you be more detailed on how you set this whole thing up ? i dont understand what u did where.

airdroid is requiring you to use wifi but id rather have airdroid running over 3G or 4G and access it via the IP address my carrier assigns my phone which is a public ip.

If you use DynDNS, you can grab the official app from the Market. Make sure to go to dyndns.com and make yourself a hostname. Then open the app on your phone, enter the appropriate information (in this case make sure to check update wireless), forward the proper port on your router, and enjoy.
I got all excited when I saw this question, but my hopes and dreams crashed down when I found that I couldn't start AirDroid on a 3G connection :-((

Oh, well, there are other things to play with when it comes to Dynamic DNS
