Another option (for users with ADB) is to connect phone to PC with USB, open terminal in directory with adb.exe, make sure your phone is connected by typing
adb devices

If your device shows type

adb forward tcp:8888 tcp:8888

and finally, open your browser and go to

localhost:8888

@jimmygoska - great advice. Works perfectly (obviously you have to switch wifi on first, even if you aren't going to use it!).

This allows me to use Airdroid at work without interupting my work pc's lan network connection which was happening when I tethered via usb it in the usual way.

It would be great if connecting via usb has been supported natively

I just wish I didn't have to turn on wifi to get Airdroid to start. Perhaps if there were a third transport option "Tunnel" for this type of purpose, which accepts connections only on 127.0.0.1:8888. It would also allow connections via ssh or vpn tunnel, which could be useful.

I agree with Jez. At least make it so we don't have to connect to a wifi, if using adb connection.
