An answer to your problem of typing in the IP could be to put a static lease on your router and naming your device. As an example, I am using DD-WRT firmware on my router. I go to the Services tab and, under static leases click Add. Then I enter the MAC, desired name, and desired IP address of the device. This gives me the ability to go to the browser and simply type "tellie:8888" (without the quotes). If that's still too difficult, go to the AirDroid application on your phone and choose a custom port of 80. Then you'd just have to type your name (ex. tellie).
